i would hope that senator harry reid would bring lettingation to the floor of the senate. i hope speaker boehner will allow some of these measures to come to the floor. in the past he has said he would only bring things to the floor that had a majority of his majority. but just recently, we did see speaker boehner bring the fiscal cliff measure to the floor that didn't have the joerts of his republican support. he also brought the sandy relief aid bill to the floor that didn't have the majority of the republicans, but it did have bipartisan majority support, both on the fiscal cliff issue and the sandy issue. so if the speaker brings some of these gun measures to the president, including the background checks, perhaps even the issue of dealing with these high capacity magazines that hold 30 to 100 rounds of ammunition in them are tools of war and have no more business than they have on midwestern streets. >> we get to invite someone to the state of the union, to invite a victim of gun violence. do you think it is these kinds of personal stories and personal connections tha

. >> but as we talk what's up with harry reid? he does seem to be backing away from the strong reform that you propose. i brought a story from talkingpointsmemo.com. senate majority leader harry reid is voicing support for a set of changes to the current filibuster rules that would fall far short of the more sweeping proposals from people like mr. cohen. what's he -- what's up? >> well, i think part of what's up is he's got four or five mocrats, many of them senior, in his own party who don't want to see this. and they're in fact at this moment trying to make their own deal with people like john mccain for next to nothing from our point of view. you wouldn't see any of those four changes that we're pushing for. and i think he is reluctant unfortunately, to go ahead with the overwhelming majority of democrats that he has. he's got 51 democrats -- >> already? >> -- who will support senate resolution 4. and we need the american people to call in to senator reid and say, let's take a stand. let's bring democracy to the u.s. senate." >>

that won't be easy to do, harry reid is very adept at saying no thanks, i want to do my project. but the republicans were humbled on the fiscal cliff, and they want the toss it to the senate. >> if i read a lot of the report correctly, it kind of seems like the republican leadership planned, of course, the speakers's planned to retreat the talk their members down, to talk them into a calmer position, from language, how you talk to women and minority voters and to the debt ceiling to some of the other broader political strategy things. you were there, is that kind of a fair read? >> yeah, you could kind of see them back away from some of the more extreme positions as the days went on. you heard -- paul ryan, yesterday, was explaining to reporters what he had been saying, first saying the three-month extension was on the table. they were saying we could change the definition of what default is, fab in the default language, prior, claiming if we hit the ceiling we can pay the important bills. mick mulvaney was saying well, default is not when the national parks close, that didn't ge

house is squarely going to deliver all of this right at harry reid's feet. what do senate democrats who are pro-gun do? and is that the easiest achilles heel for those on the right to target them? >> well, that's exactly right, thomas. i think the biggest problem for the president and his gun agenda will be harry reid and all the senate democrats up for reelection next time around. i think what john boehner and the house republicans are going to say is we'll take this up as soon as the senate passes it. and i would guarantee you that it's going to be very difficult to get this through the senate. senator reid has not come out four square behind the president's proposals. my guess is he won the -- his last election chiefly because he got the nra's endorsement. he's not going to necessarily want to turn his back. because if he does turn his back on the nra. and not just about the nra. i would say the nra has done a very good job of delegitimatizing itself with these ads. but that doesn't mean there's not a huge power of gun owners in a loot of these states, es
